Citizen Corps Council to Sponsor Raffle to Raise Money for Emergency Preparedness Programs Sign up at the Neighborhood Safety Resource Center Booth
Who are the Citizens Corps?
Citizen Corps came out of FEMA after September 11, 2001. It is a grassroots movement wherein community leaders and government come together to involve citizens in emergency preparedness and resilience.
This combination of different entities was created to help coordinate volunteer activities, making our communities better prepared to respond to emergencies and therefore making our communities safer from the threats of terrorism and disasters of all kinds.
Citizen Corps Councils are comprised of Fire Corps, USA on Watch, VIPS (volunteers in Police Service), Medical Reserve Corps and C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) which is very active in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. In Maricopa County we include voter members from industry, the public sector, faith groups and volunteer organizations.
Let’s take C.E.R.T. as an example. All the different cities in Maricopa County that have a Citizen Corps team which includes C.E.R.T. come together a few times each year to practice our skills. The NE valley, the SE valley, the Central Valley, the West Valley all take turns planning events wherein we can practice our skills. This covers sheltering, volunteer reception centers, communications, medical facilities, logistics and we practice, practice, practice. In the event of a disaster, we will be there for you assisting the first responders and Incident Command with whatever is needed.
The Arizona Central Region Citizen Corps Council (ACRCCC), which includes all of Maricopa County, meets once monthly to share information as to what is happening in the State, the County and what each individual City member is doing which can include events that are planned, classes that are being taught and so on.
Items raffled include:
-A dog bed filled with dog stuff such as auto dog watering bowl and other assorted goodies and an hour of computer trouble shooting which is a $75 value
-A cat bed filled with cat stuff such as auto cat watering bowl and other assorted goodies and an hour of computer trouble shooting which is a $75 value
The raffle is to raise money for the ACRCCC (Arizona Central Region Citizen Corps Council). The Citizen Corps is comprised of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), COPs (Volunteers in Police Service), Medical Reserve Corps, Fire Corps and US Neighborhoods on Watch. The money will be used to purchase equipment, teach classes on emergency preparedness and awareness, etc. and is accessible to any of the member cities in Maricopa County that are members of the Central Region Citizen Corps Council. Because they are a 501(c)3, the table, chair and raffle tickets are purchased with donations from non government sources. The winner does not have to be present to win.
